Requesting for an ISSN

The ISSN are assigned by the International and National Centres of ISSN.
In many countries, ISSN are systematically assigned to new serial publications in the framework of legal deposit schemes and of bibliographic agencies.
Serial publishers are however invited to request directly an ISSN, when they intend to start the publication of a new serial, or when the serial is not yet referenced in the ISSN Register (http://portal.issn.org).

How to request an ISSN number?

The following ISSN assignment request must be completed very carefully and sent with the appropriate surrogates of the serial.

Please complete the different steps of the ISSN assignment request.

When a continuing resource is published in different media (print, online, CD-ROM), or different language editions, etc... with the same title or not, different ISSN shall be assigned to the different editions  therefore different ISSN assignment requests have to be completed and sent with :

  • a sample or copies (in pdf or jpg files) of the cover, title and editorial pages indicating the publisher's name & address for a print version,
  • a sample or copies (in pdf or jpg files) of the label or carrier with the publisher's name & address, for a CD-ROM version,
  • the URL access for the online version. Give a temporary password if the resource is only available on subscription.
