Le jeu de caractères des notices ISSN est construit à partir des normes internationales ISO 646 et ISO 5426. Une combinaison des deux jeux a été réalisée conformément aux règles établies par la section 6 de la norme ISO 2022.
L'équivalence avec les caractères Unicode est également donnée dans la table ci-dessous. La représentation des caractères étant assurée ici par des entités Unicode, elle dépend de la présence sur le système de l'utilisateur des polices de caractère appropriées.
