Abbreviated titles are one of the major components of scientific and technical citations of contributions or articles. Using the standardized abbreviation is an essential part of correct and validated citation practice.
The List of Title Word Abbreviations contains the words of the titles of serials processed by the ISSN network and their abbreviations. The List includes 57,000 words in about 70 languages. The words are abbreviated in accordance with the ISO 4 standard, for which the ISSN International Centre is the maintenance agency since 1974. In conformity with the field of application of this standard, the abbreviations can also be used for the abbreviations of titles of non serial publications.
The establishment of abbreviations of the List are carried out within the ISSN Network. ISSN National Centres abbreviate words in the languages of their respective countries. The International Centre checks the validity of the proposed abbreviations with the help of linguists and ensures the consistency and conformity of the abbreviations.
These abbreviated words are the basis for the constitution of "abbreviated key titles" published in the ISSN Register.
